Our second grade students have blown me away with their kindness, generosity, and understanding this week. It all started on a Friday morning. We were talking about the horrible fires in Bastrop. The kids were asking about wild fires and what they were. I showed them a Smokey Bear video (blast from my past) and the discussion turned to how can we help. The kids brainstormed awesome ideas like making cards for the fire fighters, not wasting water so they can use it to fight the fires, and then to a donation drive. It started out simple, water bottles. But as the kids started thinking about what it would be like without their house and things, the discussion shifted. One student said, "How boring?" and then another said, "They need to be entertained!" And that is how books and toys got added to the donation drive list.
The kids did all the work! The kids created a flier, and skit on the announcements to advertise the donation drive. Then other students became collectors, and went around the school collecting the donations from the other classrooms in our school. I had teachers come up to me and say how amazed they are at how responsible and organized our students are! I'll be honest with you. I had tears of pride in my eyes! When we were having that first conversation about what we could do, all I was thinking was we could donate water bottles and write letters. The kids blew me away! I had to keep swallowing a lump in my throat! I was on the verge of tears. They were excited to help others and really wanted to help! They didn't think of themselves as JUST second graders. They had no limits. I hope that all you parents out there are as proud of your kiddos as I am! They are amazing and generous little human beings. Don't forget that!
Okay. I'm done bragging about my awesome kids! :) Hope everyone has a fabulous week!
